MacUpdate Promo
a deal a day on macintosh software
Use Narrator to read out a play or story with different voices for each of the parts. It uses speech synthesis to read out marked passages using specified voice attributes. You can choose different voices, rates, pitches, inflections, and volumes for each character in the story. The words are highlighted on-screen and there are also a couple of silent read-along options for stage directions, or for you to read out your own parts. |

dokodemo said 30/6 at 12:35am I bought this during a promotion before. I use it to read back books and scripts. The ability to cast is useful, though I usually have to edit the automatic formatting especially with strangely formatted movie scripts. Download and try out the third-party voices. They are okay. For better voices check out assistiveware and the ivox system voices. The british english voices are fantastic. |
Dejal said 30/6 at 1:05pm Hi, I'm the author of Narrator. For people who have commented that they can't take advantage of this promo as Narrator 2 requires Leopard, you might be interested to know that Narrator 1 works back to Mac OS X 10.1, though it isn't as nice as Narrator 2. Buying Narrator 2 entitles you to use Narrator 1 as well. |
ictedservices said 30/6 at 6:11am I teach a year 5 student with High Spectrum Austism. In literature circles he cannot read in a social situtaion . i think Narrator would be of grear use to his literature appreciation as he can read scanned versions of novels |
thisismike said 30/6 at 12:59am This is a GENIUS idea... I love it... As an actor, this can be an incredibly useful tool to assist in line memorization, and as a writer, this can really help you to "hear" the dialogue as you polish it.... I don't know if there are other programs out there like this, but what a cool app to promote...! |
Tannit said 30/6 at 11:30pm Good tool for writers - lots of books recommend that you read back what you've written in a monotone =) |
marzh said 30/6 at 10:46am This looks like a great way to knock out my readings for school. Usually they take up too much time, but if my mac reads them to me... |

This app is great. I was using GhostReader, which is also very good, but lacks the features of Narrator.
The big difference for me was that Narrator allows you to set pronunciations. FOr example, you can tell it to pronounce "iPod" as "eye pod", which is especially useful when you get it to read tech articles with a lot of fancy names and acronyms which text-to-speech can struggle to pronounce. To be fair, GhostReader claims they will add this feature in the future, but it's been ~12 months since I last asked and nothing has happened last time I checked.
I've never found the ability to switch between narrators particularly useful, mostly because it's quite tedious to do. I do like the design metaphor of the chapters, and the ability to format your text inside the application, rather than pointing it to an RTF of DOC document.
